Naratriptan for headaches

imagesNaratriptan is a headache medication that narrows the blood vessels in the brain to help treat those that suffer from chronic headaches known as migraines that are surrounded by other side effects such as nausea and sensitivity to sound and light.

The medication will only work on a migraine that has already started and cannot be used to prevent headaches or to reduce the amount of headaches that occur. It should not be used to treat tension headaches or any headache that feels and presents differently than a typical migraine headache that you are familiar with.

Naratriptan, more commonly known by its brand name of Amerge, is given in an oral form as a tablet that should be held underneath of the tongue until it dissolves. If one tablet is not effective then you can take a second tablet four hours later.

More than two doses of the medication should not be taken within a 24 hour period, and if the medication is not effective at relieving your symptoms within 24 hours then a doctor should be consulted before any other doses are taken. Those that need to take the medication on a long term basis are often required to have scheduled ECGs to measure heart function.

The powerful migraine drug should not be used for those that suffer from any type of heart disease, those with high blood pressure, kidney disease, angina, ischemic bowel disease, blood circulation problems, liver disease, heart rhythm disorder, women who have had a hysterectomy, or those that have suffered from a recent stroke or heart attack.

Some people suffer dangerous side effects while using naratriptan that include pain in the jaw, throat, or neck, chest pain, nausea, numbness, severe stomach pain, blueness in the extremities, and hallucinations. If you experience any of these side effects call a doctor right away.
