Sex can prevent headaches

openhairA specialist in the treatment of migraines has revealed that sex can be used as an effective tool to prevent the onset of headaches. While most people are aware of the impact that tension, diet and lack of sleep can have on headaches and migraines, hardly anyone realises what an important weapon sex can be in dealing with these unpleasant conditions, according to Audrey Halpern, MD.

Dr Halpern, who is an experienced neurologist, says that while sex is not a suitable treatment for migraines, there is evidence to suggest that those who have a healthy sex life are less likely to suffer with regular headaches than those who abstain or who have been single for a while. She went on to say that sex is as important part of a healthy lifestyle as regular exercise and a good diet, so it is hardly surprising that the effects of bedroom activity should be so wide-reaching.

Aside from the psychological benefits to be gained from regular sexual activity, headache sufferers who don’t take as much exercise as they should are also getting an extra work out between the sheets when they and their partner decide to take an early night. Sex also produces chemicals called endorphins which are the body’s natural pain killers; an effect which can be heightened by eating a small amount of dark chocolate.

Unfortunately, for some men sex can actually be the cause of head pain. Those who suffer from the rare disease coital cephalgia can experience crippling headaches during and after lovemaking. However, the majority of us can only benefit from a healthy and active sex life.
